Hey guys,

I'm thinking about buying an Indiana Jones hat on Sideshow's website. Do any of you guys own these hats? I'm looking at the $39 and $99 ones. Does anyone own both to compare? The $99 one sounds nice, but what do you guys think of the color? Is it too light? Oh, and do you choose hat size based on the exact circumference of your head, or do you buy one size up for wiggle room? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Depends on if you want a fairly accurate representation of Indy's hat or just a fedora. The one's sold on SS site are not at all accurate to any of the hats Ford wore in the movies. The crown is way too small, the topbash is a center bash in the films and the dorfman has a teardrop bash and they are too dark. A cheaper but more accurate version is an Akubra but you have to bash it yourself. Steve over at Adventurebuilt hats made most of the hats for KOTCS but they are a better quality and more expensive. He also makes a great Raiders bashed hat. I usually buy the exact size for my noggin.

DO NOT BUY IT!

If you're already allowing $100 on a hat then I recommend the Akruba as well. Believe me, you'll be happy you went with it instead of any of the "officially licensed" crap from Sideshow or any of the other companies offering it. Those are just cheap knock-offs for the less than casual fan. The Akruba is a real hat and is made to fit your head and doesn't just come in S,M,L and XL. Believe me, if you want a real hat, an Indy hat, check out the Akruba.

The Akruba which is Australian company so I'm a bit bias towards it is a very good hat. Also i really like the furfelt one looks good on. But besides these i would not get anything else they are rubbish.

Good luck !!!

I don't know which hats you've bought from them but the Federation is a wonderfully, made, quality fur felt hat. I've owned several; you can't go wrong.

Get an adventurebilt, Steve made the hats Harrison wore in Crystal Skull and will make the hat to any scene from any of the films you like.

Mine is from the opening scene of Raiders, the Idol Temple.

akubra is a great starter. for that handmade classic indy hat steve or marc of adventurebilt are top notch (14 month wait though), john penman is also a hell of a hatmaker ( 3 month wait). i've got his indy and it's awesome. i also started making them (with some little tips from john) , but i'm not as good as these guys and am not yet ready to take orders until i'm happy with the finished product.

Hats made by Steve Delk of Adventurebuilt are not just great hats, they are 100% screen accurate and they are great investments. Investments meaning that they will last at least your lifetime and are bound to increase in value in the future. Look at it this way, Harrison's hats are handmade for him ... not out of factory, handmade by a craftsman. Well that same craftsmen will do the EXACT same work for you. I own six hats by Steve, and he is a true craftsman, just like Terry Jacka or Joe Strain are for whips or Tony Nowak is for the jackets.

I love my Indy collection, especially the PF Indy and I have one very special hat from Steve, it is the actual costume test hat from KOTCS.

You can't go wrong with an Adventurebuilt hat ...

They could not be exactly like the original but they look pretty good for the price.

They aren't I own the $100 one, I reshaped it and it still doesn't look right.

The material is caca too, its not ment to be worn like a real hat, you can actually where an AB in the snow, in the pouring rain, wherever, those Dorfman hats will fall apart like that cheap rat hat Jerry bought in that Seinfeld episode.

Guys, the AB fedora is the best in my opinion as well; I own a Raiders AB and love it. However, he was asking about a $50-$100 fedora originally (hence the recommendation for Akubra and Todd's costumes). The Adventurebilt may be out of his price range (meaning what he wants to spend). At the end of August the price is going from $400 - $600 to cut down on orders (Steve wants to retire). So if money (and waiting) aren't an issue go for it! Otherwise, there are other fedoras to choose from that won't break the bank.

The link above... is actually a really good option because.. the original Raiders hat was a Herbert Johnson... ( different model.. but same brand).. now get this.. Magnoli Clothiers sends his Herbert Johnson's off to none other than Steve Delk to be shaped... so in the end you get the best of both worlds I think.. a Herbert JOhnson body, shaped by the man Steve Delk.. I ordered mine right at six months ago.. so I should be getting it any time now :)

That's what I thought too Mikey.. but Magnoli is still advertising them for sale.. it was my understanding he would stop offering them once the supply was gone... regardless, after six months of anticipation, mine came in yesterday :)
