Sony Shuts Down PlayStation Network Indefinitely
By Ian Sherr

From Digits: Internet gamers were frustrated last week when Sony shut down its PlayStation Network. Now, they might have reason to be worried.

Reuters

Sony said on Monday that it is keeping its PlayStation Network videogame service offline indefinitely.
On Monday, the Japanese electronics giant said it is keeping its PlayStation Network videogame service offline indefinitely following a hacking attack it now says may have compromised user’s information.

To ensure the network’s integrity, Sony said it is currently rebuilding the service, which connects more than 75 million PlayStation customers over the Internet, letting them play videogames and chat together. “This is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly,” Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said in a blog post.

Sony is still investigating the “external intrusion” that forced the electronics giant to shut down its network last Wednesday. In an email, the company also said it is also trying to figure out if any personal information, such as credit card numbers, may have been compromised in the attack.

Interesting....I wonder how long until XBOX Live becomes targeted....

:lol Console gaming. Adorable.

Maybe while its down you can just pay some 6 year olds to hurl sexual insults at you over a bluetooth.

Yeah, its been down since Wednesday night and they do not give an ETA when it will be back up. I don't do any multiplayer gaming myself (I really, really suck at it) but do use PS Network for buying classic games and downloading trailers. It's just an inconvenience to me. But for someone who loves multiplayer gaming, its got to be a ____ing travesty. Really sad that this has happened and all because a bunch of hackers. One of the things though that is interesting here is that PSN is free. If this was XBOX LIVE, Microsoft would have probably had this worked out within a few hours since people have to pay for that service. Just sayin.

Yeah this really does suck. I'm not an online gamer, but I like to download stuff online and I really want to download Kitana's classic costume for Mortal Kombat and it sucks I can't. Hopefully this gets worked out soon.

Notice that the Sony update that the blog author linked to doesn't use the term 'indefinitely'

I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time.

As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly. We’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.

THAT is the actual update. Nothing to report on actually. So, what do you do when there's nothing to report on?? Make ____ up.

I assume most of you know that this attack was a response to Sony suing mega hacker George Holtz (Aka Geohot) for jailbreaking the PS3 and publishing his findings online. It really is an interesting story if you research it. On a side, it is only a matter of time before terrorist hackers shut down our power grids.

I assume most of you know that this attack was a response to Sony suing mega hacker George Holtz (Aka Geohot) for jailbreaking the PS3 and publishing his findings online.

Nobody's claimed responsibility for it, so how can you say it's a response to Sony's suit?

People are saying it's a response, but nobody's saying they did it. If a tree falls down in the woods . . .

That is true, there are conflicting reports on whether or not it is actually indefinitely, that's why I posted a question mark because it's hard to get anything official on that plateau.

If this was XBOX LIVE, Microsoft would have probably had this worked out within a few hours since people have to pay for that service. Just sayin.

There is plenty that goes wrong with LIVE on a regular basis, it's just not so widespread as this is so it doesn't really get a lot of buzz. Hell Bungie for example which utilizes the LIVE service has outages and issues with their servers all the time that people nerd rage over all the time but it goes with no more than a shrug. It's a different situation because every PS3 owner is affected.

Guess they can watch a bluray while their junk is down :lol

In reality, my PS3 at this point is a glorified Blu-Ray player. At the time I bought it, the Blu-Ray players were the same price as PS3s so being able to play games on it was a nice plus but ever since I went to an XBOX 360 it doesn't get much use.

Here the FAQ from the PSN:

The BIG PSN Outage FAQ

How long has PSN been down?
The system went down last Wednesday, April 20th. (That's six days if you're keeping score.)

When will it be back?
No one really knows, not even Sony. Current rumors suggest that PSN may be going back online in Japan today (4/25), with the US and Europe coming back tomorrow. (4/26)

Can I play games without going online, either by myself or with a friend locally?
Absolutely. Almost every PS3 game, whether it's played via disc or download, will work so long as you're using a mode that doesn't require PSN access. (That's internet multiplayer, mostly.) There is a small exception to this, which I'll explain a little later.

What about using a LAN?
Sure, a setting up a little LAN party would be a great alternative. The only problem is that the selection of LAN-capable PS3 games is pretty limited.

Is Anonymous responsible?
Probably not. The group has publicly denied their involvement, and there has been no definitive proof to say otherwise.

So why are they being arrested?
They aren't. The rumor is based on an old press release from January.

If the network was hacked, should I be worried that someone is stealing my credit card number?
Sony has said that they are investigating whether or not any credit information was stolen. As of now, they haven't said anything about the status of that investigation. So far there have been no credible reports of identity theft connected to the shutdown.

Some games use digital rights management to prevent piracy. Will that affect my ability to play?
As of now, the only games that we know to be affected are a pair of Capcom downloadable games, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and the Final Fight/Magic Sword game pack.

So I can't play any games online or use PSN. Can I still use non-game PSN apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc?
Nope. No game modes, apps or DLC connected to either PSN or Qriocity are currently available.

UPDATE: As you can tell from the comments section, we are getting conflicting reports on whether or not Netflix is actually working at the moment. Many commenters and forum-goers have claimed that they've been using Netflix for days, often noting that the service doesn't always connect right away, but starts up on the second or third try.

What about features like the browser, which use the internet, but aren't connected to PSN?
Users have reported via forums that the PS3 browser still works.

Can I still get system updates?
The system update feature is not connected to PSN and is therefore functional. (Ever notice that you have to sign out of PSN to download an update?) Users can still also download system updates via the Playstation website.

Is there a chance my trophies could get wiped?
Trophies will not update as long as PSN is down, but since most of them are not internet-based, it's likely (but not definite) that the trophies that you earn during the shutdown will be added to your account when it updates once PSN is back online. If you were to delete your account or if your console were to crash, however, you would definitely lose any trophies earned while PSN is down. Currently, it is not possible to check trophies via the Playstation website.

Will I lose my saved game data?
Not likely, your saved game data is stored on your hard drive, and therefore should not be affected by the outage.

Am I more likely to lose my data if I've been using the cloud storage feature of
Playstation Plus?
No. While you definitely aren't able to update any data you've saved in the cloud, the cloud data is technically a copy of whatever was saved from your machine, so even if the back-up data was lost your save would still be in tact on the machine where it was originally recorded.

This is so unfortunate. I hope that they find the person (or persons) who are responsible for this mess, and bring them to justice. Hackers need to get a life.

It's still going on?

https://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92515

Hackers suck. Spoiled ____ing brats.

Hackers can go to hell. No one cares about them, or their lame causes, and I'm not aware of anyone who sympathizes with them for this incident. They're not just harming Sony, but also the millions of customers who use Sony's services. Also, don't forget the folks who pay for Playstation Plus, but won't be able to use the PSN. I hope these hackers get found out.

Nobody's claimed responsibility for it, so how can you say it's a response to Sony's suit?

People are saying it's a response, but nobody's saying they did it. If a tree falls down in the woods . . .

Right. However 2+2 ALWAYS =5

It's common sense they were targeted not only for Geohotz,(although i would bet my left 'squirrel snack' his situation was the final straw), but also for there policy of always suing there customers and being corporate asses in general. A part of me applauds the little people who take on the greedy elite who paralyze this world. The other part is pissed that it has come to this.
