In the film and all the stills I've seen, there seems to be illumination coming from within the hookah, so...

I'm thinking of installing a little light in the bowl and the hookah. Suggestions?

I was thinking of drilling through the top of the bowl and the bottom of the hookah, installing the light source (LED?) in the hookah, so that the light comes though the top of the bowl when it's all put together.

I need ideas on how to go about doing this, including possible lights to use, power source, drills that will go through metal (the magnets) and polystone without destroying the pipe and bowl...you get the idea.

Great minds think alike, and then so do ours- I've been considering the same questions, but the thought of bringing a dremel near a $200 polystone item is making me very nervous.

I don't have many results yet on picking lights, power sources, etc, but am researching it, as I want to put my fanning Jawa on AC power as well as possibly light the hookah and bowl. I'll let you know what I uncover, and vice versa?

One possibility is using stuff from https://www.cir-kitconcepts.com/ .

I'm thinking of testing my dremel on a few ploystone bases. I'd rather crack the Helm of Mouth's base then Jabba's Throne! :horror

I'll definitely post here when I figure something out. I knew I wasn't the only one contemplating this.

I figure whatever wires need to snake out of the set-up can be quietly attached to the inside curves of the bannister and painted to match, with the power source hidden behind or beside the throne. I could even cut some stairs to fit over the power source next to Jabba!

Couldn't you just tape/tie a thin light to the bottom of the rail and put it right next to the bowl. At least you wouldn't have to drill any holes???

Aesthetics, man! Besides, that wouldn't illuminate the pipe.

the bottom of the hookah bowl and top of the food bowl each have a magnet in it so you're going to have to go into metal first, not to mention the hookah bowl is a solid piece so i'm pretty sure its not going to light up the way you guys are thinking it is.

just don't want to see anyone putting holes in $200 pieces fruitlessly

The Hookah bowl IS a solid piece but it refracts light pretty well. Ithink it'll give off a nice glow if the light within is bright enough.

I worry about drilling into it too, but much must be risked. That is why I'm going to practice on other things first, after MUCH research. Presumably, I'll use a drillbit that goes through metal as well as polystone....

I was always going to do this to the Sauron's mace with a led ect I always thought it looked so much better in the ss pictures with the base that was all glowing red.

If i had this piece Michael I was going to do exactly the same thing, so now you have to do it because i want to see what it looks like!

because I'm stupid

So, because I'm the reckless sort, I put my bowl and hookah under the scalpel, um, I mean dremel.

I had good results with the bowl:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/metaphorge/402958659/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="https://farm1.static.flickr.com/164/402958659_c604c138af_o.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="DSCF1843" /></a>

My dremel's drillbit was able to handle the thin later of metal with little trouble. The only downside is that drilling through filled the bowl with dust particles, but this was pretty much taken care of with a can of computer duster.

A simple downlight should be sufficient to give the muck and the frogs a pleasant glow.

The hookah section was a bit more mixed of a result:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/metaphorge/402958079/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="https://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/402958079_7999ac4485_o.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="DSCF1842" /></a>

When I tried to go through the center, the drillbit was simply having none of the metal/magnet layer. I had better luck going diagonally through the corner of the bottom, as you can see above.

Mikey is right, the globe of the hookah does refract light well (I tried hodling a mini-maglight up right against its side and it glowed nicely. In order to light it a bulb would need to be right up against it). I'm not sure whether going in a spot like the one I was able to make way in on the corner of the bottom or going directly in through the side is the better method; the former woulf require a much longer drill bit than I have, and I'm quite nervous about trying a bit any larger in diameter than the tiny one I had with the dremel for fear of creating cracks.

So, anyway, here's the report from my exploratory mission. In any case I'm not going to do any further drilling until my lights get here so I can get a better idea of how big any holes would need to be.

Does anyone have better dimensions of the throne environment other than the ones posted on the throne product page?

I'm looking for pretty thorough measurements.

-From the top of the hookah bowl to the bottom of the base
-From the top of the rail to the bottom of the base
-From just the top of the base to the bottom of the base
-Tip of left gargoyle head to tip of right gargoyle head
-From left end of base (without gargoyle head) to right end of base (without gargoyle head)
-Tip of front gargoyle head to tip of back gargoyle head
-From front end of base (without gargoyle head) to back end of base (without gargoyle head)
-And meaurement of the rail - height, length of side along right side of the base, and length of the side along the back of the base

Can't afford to buy the throne right now, so I was going to have a go at making my own custom. Jabba just doesn't feel right without it. Any help would be tremendous :)

:bow:bow:bow

My God. You are a brave man. My dremel is coming nowhere near the hookah and bowl until I have the lights sorted out. I've got a bit that goes through metal, so we'll see what happens. I'd like to drill eep enough to put the light righ in the center of the hookah, but that may not be possible...

Okay, so I lied. :D

After using a screwdriver to determine how much of the bottom of the hookah piece contains the magnet (it seems to be about the same size as the magnet in the mynock and in Ghoel), I enlarged the hole in the side considerably:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/metaphorge/403033745/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="https://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/403033745_e3e590b23d_o.jpg" width="600" height="450" alt="DSCF1844" /></a>

This created a massive cloud of dust, but did not seem to put any stress on the structural integrity of the hookah at all. It should be simple to drill all the way up to the refractory material that the dome of the hookah is made of and insert a light....

I saw that pic and started to hyperventilate until I realized it's all unseen when you put the Hookah back over the bowl. :rotfl

Excuse my squeamishness. I know this is my thread and was my idea after all, but I'm still nervous about it. It is most heartening to see someone taking the task in hand. Hopefully we can help each other not screw up!

It's up to you, KD. I'm just learning how to work with the lights and things. I'm really more of a painter, so this is new territory for me. I imagine this'd be a snap for someone like Hurricane...

If you do, just bear in mind that drilling through the covering of the bowl will MAKE THE INSIDE OF THE BOWL VERY VERY DUSTY, and even compressed air does not completly clean it out. I don't think that the small amount if dust remaining detracts from the bowl's appearance, but your mileage will vary.

Yeah, I was asking myself just what the heck I thought I was doing when I sank in the dremel, but sometimes you just have to say what the heck.

Well mine came with a large chip on the bottom, so I called SS for a replacement. I gonna wait and see how this turns out and see if maybe I can pull it off.

Interesting....

I say go for it, then. If it's already chipped, and you've got a spare, you've nothing to lose!
