What do you think will happen when all the old collectors die off? Do you think the younger ones will drop thousands of dollars on a hard copy when they can get the same thing in digital for $2?

Are you kidding me? You do understand the value of what silver/bronze/copper age CGC comics are going for these days? Investors as well as collectors are paying large sums for these certified books through comic auction sites such as Pedigree Comics, Heritage Auctions, ComicLink and Comic Connect.

I follow the industry closely, it's my specialty and I'm a buyer.

I think you're seeing a completely different show than the rest of us. Perhaps a bit defensive? Does your house look like some of the more extreme collectors?

I'm more curious - did they make up the term "model bashing" just for the show?

Nope. I see a reality TV show that's making collectors look like the scourge of society. I don't agree with hoarders either. I think that's a horrible show and don't understand why anybody would really want to watch that either. And no, my house doesn't look like that. Anything more than 3 figures to a detolf shelf is a clutter****. :lecture:lecture:lecture

Okay, this show is officially bullcrap. They made the Flintstones guy (Dave Nimitz) look like a totally dysfunctional shut-in and a guy who collects Flintstones only because he's a man-child. Well it turns out he actually works in professional animation, and has for years. In fact, he got a lot of his pieces directly from Barbera's ex-assistant. Dude was an animation cel painter on "The Iron Giant", "Lilo & Stitch", and more. Funny how that was never mentioned whatsoever.

Sounds like a show I should keep missing. I don't care for shows that sole goal is to make people look bad just because you can.

Personally, if I can afford the CGC books, I will take them any day over the digital copies. People who buy digital comics just want to read them. They don't and can't afford to collect comics.

Like nearly ALL reality shows, it's about 90% fake.

A quote from arecent episode

"So I think I need a little more information about Marlo’s collection, before we can make a plan”

“When a collector starts keeping secrets about their collection from family members, it can be a sight that there’s a real problem”

“He’s a great artist, he should work in the movies or in the comics, that’s his dream job”

Who's this mario of which they speak?

DC Comics inker Marlo Alquiza was on the season finale of Collection Intervention on SyFy two nights ago.

Wait... a DC comics inker... SHOUuld get a job working in comics?

What is this.. I don't even.

the guy in the show had a really huge problem space, he did not have a place for the comics,

plus with that many comics, you are bound to lose a few, there could always be a fire or a flood,

having digital comics in an External Hard drive, BOOM problem solved,
he could buy 3 external hard drives and keep copies just in case,

Just watched the last episode and I don't know if it's because I read the posts about Marlo, but I got the sense that he felt like he was in a different kind of show. He seemed so happy and relaxed and more than glad to show his collection. His wife, OTOH, looked like she was told to appear annoyed and bedraggled by his collecting habits.

I loved his custom figures--fantastic work!

And wow, that Flintstones guy was really bizarre. He really came across as "special", or at the very least, like someone with Asperger's.

I agree with everyone here that the show could shift slightly and have it be more about organizing the collections, ways to display and preserve them better, ways to inventory, and yes, even have ways to trim the excess fat and have a collection be more concise and tight. I mean, with the comic book guy, all he needed was to rent a storage space and problem solved! They could maybe also talk a little about how to keep your spending under control if money was an issue.

I have to say that the psychiatrist guy was a major tool. He was like a caricature of what a psychiatrist who is clueless about the subject would be like! Total idiot! Every time they brought him on, I was climbing the walls with embarrassment and discomfort!

Anyway, I did enjoy seeing everyone's collection, I thought it was pretty cool that people here actually know some of those participants! And thanks emarae for coming in here and posting about your experience!

However, the show did serve as a warning to me to never let me go that far with my collecting! ;)

I watched the comic guy episode, I find it hard to believe a dealer would trade him a Hulk 181 9.0 for 2000 comics that he'd be lucky to get a dollar a piece for. I guess if said dealer hauls all of those comics around to conventions, puts them on ebay, sells some in his store, he might be getting a better deal in the long run. But I don't see it, especially after putting all that time and energy into selling them. I could be wrong, just having a hard time believing it.

I have never seen a person more passionate about his comics than this guy. I saw both sides of the argument, but I think this guy would be happier with 2000 comics to read as opposed to the one he traded his collection for. He'd been making this collection of comics for the pure joy of reading them for the last 25 years. I was amazed he let them go.

It's already been debunked. Dude posted in the follow-up on SyFy's website that the trade was never made. :wave

I thought the same thing, I lol'ed :lol

Has emarae seen the full episode yet?

Good, that was ridiculous.

Yeah, believe it or not, it really is Marlo and Margo! That's my silly wife alright! Not her actual name on legal documents, but everyone calls her by Margo. When I heard that, I figured I needed to married this girl! LOL!

As for the episode, I finally did see it since the production company sent me a couple DVD copies! I guess it wasn't too bad, but I didn't like all the stuff about me having "problems" that were troubling our marriage and crap like that! My wife is cool with my collection, but she does want me to thin it out and slow it down which is totally understandable and something I also agree with! Anyways, again, it's all just entertainment stuff in the end and unfortunately they couldn't do a more serious take on collectors and their awesome collections. A lot of cool stuff was shot, but unfortunately a lot of it wasn't used. Oh well...

Yeah, that sucks how they portrayed you. So was your wife crying legit? That and the family pic made things worse for you. But of all the episodes shown you were the most normal and happy go-lucky (and successful). I need to be rich like you :lol

Do you have your own thread? You really need to make a thread to show off your awesome collection. I wanna see'em! Loved seeing your Ghibli and DBZ cels in the background. Showcase your stuff! Like your BR Takeshi, Wonka, Deadpool, Manny...do it! :lol:clap

You know, I've been thinking about doing one. I might consider it very soon, so we'll see. In the meantime I do have lots of videos of stuff from my collection on my YouTube channel located here if you're interested...

Finally saw the rest of your episode Marlo... you actually came off much better than a lot of the people they show. But still you can tell the tried to play up the "drama" as much as possible.

I have to say I love that Popy Godzilla figure of yours... I own the Shogun Warriors version, but never knew there was one that actually looked like Godzilla. That was a totally badass piece, but if someone really payed double it's value I can't fault you on selling it (if that even happened or if it was just staged :lol).

I was joking with my wife that this show probably shouldn't be intended to make me want to buy even more stuff, but I've now added that search to eBay :lol

Great example of SyFy biting the hand that once fed it. They actually hate their target demographic.

"Hey, let's do a show where we seek out people who collect sci-fi stuff and make them look bad! Look at this idiot with a house full of Stargate stuff! He looks like one of those Farscape freaks!"
"We made Stargate, sir. And Farscape. Fans consider them two of our be...."
"You're sh-tting me! I work for a network that made that crap!?! We need to fix that!"

Fixed for accuracy. The visiting "psychologists" infer that every single person on that show had a mental disorder because they actually have a decent collection and don't flip their grails. :monkey1
